Capturing the Essence of Edmonton: My Favorite Shooting Spots

Edmonton is a city of hidden gems. Beyond the well-known landmarks, there are corners of this city that offer incredible backdrops for portraits, lifestyle shoots, and architectural photography. As a local photographer, I’ve spent years scouting the best light and the most unique textures.

Here are a few of my favorite spots to shoot in Edmonton.

1. The Muttart Conservatory

While the pyramids themselves are iconic, the surrounding grounds offer a variety of perspectives. The contrast between the geometric glass structures and the natural greenery (or snow!) creates a modern, sophisticated vibe. It’s especially beautiful at golden hour when the sun hits the glass at just the right angle.

2. Alberta Legislature Grounds

For something more classic and regal, you can’t beat the “Ledge.” With its grand stone columns, manicured gardens, and the stunning views of the river valley, it’s a versatile location that works for everything from graduation photos to corporate headshots.

3. The High Level Bridge

The rusted steel and repetitive patterns of the High Level Bridge provide a wonderful industrial aesthetic. Whether you’re shooting on the bridge itself or from the paths below, it adds a sense of scale and history to your images. The “Latta Bridge” area nearby also offers some great urban grit.

4. Elk Island National Park

If you’re willing to drive just a bit outside the city, Elk Island is a dream for nature lovers. The wide-open prairies, tranquil lakes, and the chance of spotting bison make for a truly “Alberta” backdrop. It’s the perfect spot for sunset sessions where the sky seems to go on forever.

Tips for Shooting in YEG

  • Check the Wind: Edmonton can be breezy, especially near the river. Plan hairstyles accordingly!
  • Layer Up: Even in summer, the temperature can drop quickly once the sun goes down.
  • Permits: Some locations require booking or permits for professional photography, so always double-check before you go.
